עבודת האכר | 'Avodat ha-ikar | Work of the Farmer (1912)

Artist: Abraham Zvi Idelsohn (1882-1938)

Lyrics: From Ha-Zamir

Tune: Foreign Melody

Hebrew translation (PDF)

The text of this song was published in Ha-Zamir (Odessa, 1903: p. 24), with instructions that Idelsohn omitted in Sefer Ha-Shirim.

Each verse is to be sung by a soloist, who introduces a part of the farmer's work. The choir answers: "la, la, la, la, the farmer is doing such work". The farmer plows, sows, and harvests. Upon finishing his work,  he rests and dances,

The lyrics were inspired by the German folksong “Im Märzen der Bauer” [The Farmer in March], but the melody is not borrowed from this work. It is possible that the melody had another German source that is not identified. The melody is in a major key.
