בחרף | Ba-horef | In The Winter (1912)

Artist: Abraham Zvi Idelsohn (1882-1938)

Lyrics: From Ha-Zamir

Tune: Ben-Yehuda

The text of this song was published in the second volume of Ha-Zamir (Odessa, 1903: p. 22) under the title “Be-lel horef" [During a Winter’s Night]. It was written by Noah Pines, the editor of Ha-Zamir.

In “Ba-horef”, a mother sits in a room somewhere in Europe and tells her son about a far-away place in the East, where the sun shines all year round, and grapes, dates and orchards grow. In this lovely and vibrant country, the Jewish nation once lived and is to return soon.

Idelsohn (Ben-Yehuda) composed a melody for two voices, in a minor key.
