This piece was composed and published by Israel Lazaus Mombach (1813-1880), a German-born cantor and composer who worked mainly in London. It was published in his book of compositions for the synagogue, Ne'im Zmirot Yisrael [The Sacred Musical Compositions] (London, 1881: pp. 127-129).

The psalm praises God as the Shepherd of Israel. The music is set for a four-voice choir in an antiphonal style.
