באור שמש | Be-or shamesh | In The Light of the Sun (1912)

Artist: Abraham Zvi Idelsohn (1882-1938)

Lyrics: Yaakov Cohen (1881-1960)

Tune: Ben-Yehuda, based on traditional tunes

This song was written and published by Yaakov Cohen (1881-1960), as the opening poem to the first volume of his anthology Sefer Ha-Shirim (Warsaw: 1902: p. 5). The text likens the sun to life.

Idelsohn (Ben-Yehuda) composed a melody based on various traditional sources, some of which may be Hasidic. The song has three parts; each one repeats twice, in a natural minor key.
